11:00 a.m. David Kammer on WPA
David Kammer a Ph.D. in American Studies has been in New Mexico working as an architectural and public historian . Much of his work has been devoted to surveying historic properties and then preparing nominations for listing them in the National Register of Historic Places. Among the nominations for individual buildings and historic districts that he’s prepared are Route 66 Across New Mexico, the New Deal throughout New Mexico, the suburban growth of Albuquerque, historic bridges in New Mexico, and historic district nominations for Truth or Consequences, Ft. Bayard, and Mora.
    Summary: New Mexico’ New Deal
Franklin Roosevelt campaigned for office promising Americans a “New Deal.” Within months of entering office, he began the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and the Public Works Administration (PWA). Two years later the Works Progress Administration ((WPA) began. New Mexico benefitted immensely from these New Deal programs, ranking fifth in the nation in terms of New Deal initiatives. Aiding these efforts was Clyde Tingley, who supported the New Deal and aggressively sought to bring projects to the state. This illustrated talk will look at the New Deal in New Mexico and explore its legacy that remains with us today.
2:00 p.m. Cipriano Vigil - Cipriano Vigil, a native of Chamisal
in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, is the living embodiment of nuevomexicano ritual music. As a boy, he learned from the previous generations of musicians at bailes (dances) and at entriegas, matrimonios y difuntos (christenings, marriages and funerals.) He takes you back to the encircling institutions where these village rituals bound families and neighbors together in responsibility for each other. His songs in the nueva cancion tradition (related to U.S. protest and labor songs) address poignant issues of today. His solo program is available through NMEH; a program with his family band is available directly through Dr. Vigil.Cipriano Vigil’s vast knowledge of New Mexico music comes from personal experience and a Ph.D. in Musicology. He teaches at Northern New Mexico Community College.
